Welcome to Little Portugal

Little Portugal is bounded by Dovercourt to the East and College St to the North. Well, the rest of the boundaries are a bit complicated. The Canadian National Railway (CNR) train tracks at the Corner of Dundas just East of Lansdowne then head South East to King St just east of Sudbury St. This diagonal path forms the Western boundary of Little Portugal.

This predominantly residential area is home to the Portuguese and Brazilian demographic however the development of thousands of new residential condominiums have brought in all types of young Torontonians. First made popular by hotspots like the Gladstone Hotel conversion along Queen West this area is now seen as a legitimate extension of the Queen West corridor. Along Dundas it's quite easy to see the roots of Little Portugal. Small, locally owned and operated businesses still line the busy (and frequently under construction) Dundas St West.

House prices here are certainly more affordable than neighbouring communities to the South (Trinity Bellwoods, Palmerston Little Italy and Niagara). Many young families have begun to buy up old run down houses and are slowly staring to renovate. Mostly semi detached or row houses but some stunning Victorian Semis are sure to strain any buyers budget.

Naco Gallery Cafe

Restaurant

From colonial times the word naco was a pejorative word used to describe native people, who tended to be poor and without formal education. Recently, however, the word has been reclaimed by modern young Mexicans. For them, naco can mean cool. NACO Gallery looks back to the origins of the word in the Totanac language. The Totanac culture ruled most of what is now Veracruz in Mexico before the Aztecs conquered them about 25 years before the Spanish conquistador Cortes landed in AD 1516. The capital city of the Totanac culture was at Zempoala, and at the time of the Spanish arrival, they numbered about 100,000 people. In the Totanac language, naco refers to the heart: "The Heart's Town" or "The People's Heart"
